If you’re my age, you have fond memories of Snoopy and the Peanuts gang in various comic strips, TV shows, and cartoons. The cast of characters and stories were created by the great Charles Schulz. The main characters of Snoopy and Charlie Brown have been icons in the cartoon and animation world. Now, Snoopy and the Peanuts gang could be coming to Apple’s new video streaming service in a new animated series.
The Canadian group DHX Media, owns 80% of the rights to Snoopy, Charlie Brown and all of the Peanuts characters. DHX Media purchased these rights back in 2017 at a cost of $317 million dollars.
The new show should feature all your favorites including Woodstock, Linus, Pig-Pen, Charlie Brown, Sally, Lucy, Peppermint Patty, and of course Snoopy. The deal DHX and Apple have agreed to is apparently for a new animated series including specials and shorts. There was also rumblings of the characters in an educational series as well.
The Canadian group will also create educational programs including the Peanuts gang, exclusively for Apple, around space and the conquest of space.
Charles Schulz ran the Peanuts cartoon strip for years and he passed away in February 2000. Rumors have been piling up over the past year about Apple’s move into its own streaming service. This move shows just how serious they are about moving into a market with stiff competition. If they want to succeed, they’ll need to take on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, HBO, and others to do so. We also don’t know if an Apple streaming service will be exclusive to Apple devices or be offered to a broader base. Knowing Apple’s past choices, it seems they’re not likely to support anything but Apple hardware.
