The 2018 Sony World Photography Awards is on display at London’s Somerset House until 6 May — and the winners have been announced.
The world’s largest — and according to Somerset House, “most diverse” photography competition, the 2018 Sony World Photography Awards features work by over 600 artists, picked from a “record-breaking” stack of submissions across portraiture, landscape, street photography, travel, and many more genres and curated by ex-picture editor of British Vogue Mike Trow.
Among the winners are Alys Tomlinson, whose image from her pilgrimage-focused series Ex-Voto won the photographer first place in the awards’ Discovery category, and the esteemed title Sony Photographer of the Year. Antonio Gibotta’s image of a Spanish “flour war” Enafrinat won second place in the Discovery category, while an image from Fredrik Lerneryd’s series Slum Ballet depicting young Kenyan women learning ballet in Nairobi came top of the Contemporary Issues category.
